The Incredible Story of Mind Maps

You see, a mind map is a diagram or picture used to visually outline information. For example, a single word or idea is placed in the middle and then branches containing related words and ideas shoot out from that main word. By following the branches, you can quickly grasp a series of concepts.

Mind maps have been used as far back as the 3rd century… even to help visualize the works of Aristotle. But it wasn’t until the past decade that their profound benefits have been scientifically studied.

For instance, in one study, over 80% of participants reported that mind maps helped them to significantly better understand complex ideas and concepts.

Another study, on college undergraduate students, reported that mind maps had a dramatic, positive impact on memory recall. And yet another clinical study found that mind maps were far more effective in getting from “point A to point B” than reading text, attending lectures or participating in group discussions.

In other words, mind maps are proven to work remarkably well… and have for centuries… while also being the fastest way to get where you want to be.

But They Have One Fatal Flaw…

And that is mind maps can be confusing, vague… and for most folks, completely baffling.

That’s because mind maps were originally intended to only be used by the person who created them. That means if “Joe” created a mind map, it would only make sense to “Joe”. No one else could really benefit from “Joe’s” mind map.

Let me illustrate this by going back to the example I gave earlier about airport directions. When someone says “go that way”, it makes perfect sense to them. But to you, those directions are vague… and as the road starts changing… the directions make no sense. So you end up lost.

However, if someone said “just follow the red line on the road”, you’ll end up at the airport in short order, regardless of what happens along the way.

And after years of development (with clients around the world), that’s what I’ve done with mind maps.
